Perhaps you are considering energy from the sun. It is source of free power that is
completely renewable. However, it is not free to install, and it may help to know about
solar electricity panels basics.
To understand how power is generated from sunlight, a brief understanding of atomic structure
of matter is needed. All things are made from tiny building blocks called atoms. Atoms have
a center or nucleus, and they consist of neutrons and protons. Neutrons are neutral and protons
are positive. The other parts of the atoms are electrons, which orbit the nucleus in a similar
fashion to the way the planets orbit the sun.
Solar panels are made of many photovoltaic cells. As sunlight hits the cells, an imbalance of
electrons is created, and some electrons are freed from their orbits. There are two sets of
plates, and one is a positive charge and the other is negative. Freed electrons flow from negative
to positive as they search to balance themselves out.
You can notice the same thing, if you comb your hair and hold the comb near paper. You can see
the reaction of the electrons as they move from the comb to the paper. This movement of electrons
is called electricity, and it flows in current as water flows in a river bed.
Back to the power plates, the energy will flow from the negative plate to the positive. If you
attach a wire from the negative plate, to an appliance, the energy will flow through the appliance
and back to the positive plate, which is grounded. This balances out the charge, and the cycle is
repeated many times over. This is how power gets from the sun to your appliances.
In understanding solar electricity panels basics, think of two separate plates. These plates contain
photovoltaic cells. As sunlight strikes the cells, it frees electrons and they flow from the negative
plate to the positive plate. In the process, they pass through appliances, and light fixtures in the
home. They may also be stored in batteries.
